As part of our semi-annual Morningstar Category review, Morningstar will update our US and international category methodologies effective April 30, 2024. To learn more about the changes, please see the attached FAQ.

Please select the links below for the detailed summary and ID mapping documentation. The updated methodology documents will be provided 30 days before the effective date.

  • Domicile/Region (Universes):
    • United States (US Open-End, Variable Annuity, Exchange-Traded Fund, Closed-End Fund, Separate Account, Collective Investment Trust, Unit Investment Trust, and Models): Please see the attached spreadsheet for changes to the US Categories, summarized below. 
      • US Retail Categories:
        • 1 new US Retail Category will be added
        • 5 existing US Retail Categories will be renamed
        • 1 US Retail Category will update the assigned Secondary/Category Index
      • Fee Level Groups:
        • 2 new Fee Level Groups will be added
      • US Institutional Categories:
        • 12 new US Institutional Categories will be added
        • 30 US Institutional Categories will be renamed
      • US 529 Categories:
        • 5 US 529 Categories will be renamed
    • International: Please see the attached spreadsheet for changes to international categories, summarized below.
      • Australia (Open-End Funds, Closed-End Funds, ETFs)
        • Morningstar will add 2 new categories and retire 1 existing category.  
      • Europe, Africa & Asia (Open-End Funds, Closed-End Funds, ETFs)
        • Morningstar will add 1 new category, rename 2 existing categories, retire 7 categories, and update the benchmarks of 117 existing categories.
      • Japan (Open-End Funds, Closed-End Funds, ETFs)
        • Morningstar will add 4 new categories, retire 1 existing category, and update the benchmarks of 2 existing categories.
